World Biathlon Championships, Oslo

The Biathlon World Championship will be held 3–13 March at Holmenkollen in Oslo. Our tradition-rich national arena for winter ski sports also arranged this event in 1986 and 2000.

This year the championship is expected to host around 400 participants from almost 50 countries. The biathlon has grown in popularity in many countries since the first world championship was hosted by Saalfelden, Austria, in 1958. The first world championship for women was held in 1984. The biathlon competition format has been developed in close cooperation with the television companies, and this has contributed to raising the popularity of the sport.

In 1965, Elverum hosted the first biathlon world championship to be held in Norway, and for the first time in history a Norwegian, Olav Jordet, claimed the top spot on the podium. Vingrom in Lillehammer hosted the world championship in 1977, and Holmenkollen hosted for the first time in 1986.

Norway was the only applicant for this year's world championship, but it should be mentioned that we also applied in 2014 and 2015 and were not selected.  This year it is finally Norway's turn again!
